For some in-situ Raman characterizations with very high test requirements, the focusing distance will be required to be relatively close. At this time, a detachable L-shaped disc electrode can realize the adjustable distance between the surface material of the working electrode and the quartz plate, and the shortest distance can reach 0.5mm. DekResearch offers two such disc-mounted electrodes, which can be used instead of PEEK platinum electrode clamps. The electrodes are φ6mm glassy carbon electrode and φ4mm gold disk electrode.

The φ4mm gold disk electrode jacket insulation rod is a PEEK rod with a Teflon isolation ring. A Teflon isolation ring is embedded between the PEEK insulation material and the glassy carbon disc. Due to the hydrophobic nature of the Teflon material, the surface tension of the solution increases, which can prevent the solution sample on the electrode surface from spreading to the surroundings to obtain a good electrode surface modification effect.

Choosing φ4mm gold disk as the substrate is also considering that more materials can be modified to facilitate the final laser Raman spectroscopy characterization test.Another important factor is that there are Raman peaks on the surface of the glassy carbon electrode itself. The gold base material itself has a lower Raman peak, which will have a smaller impact on the laser Raman characterization of the material.

The electrode must be designed as a detachable structure with threaded connection. This facilitates the electrode tip to pass through the working electrode hole through the φ35mm window, so that it can be screwed to the electrode rod and conduct electricity. And make sure that the screw connection after tightening is outside the O-ring to prevent the electrolyte from contacting the connection.

The volume of the electrolytic cell should be selected moderately. If the volume is too large, the amount of solution will be too much, which is unnecessary. During electrochemical measurement, the electrode surface undergoes oxidation and reduction reactions, and some substances in the solution are reduced by participating in the electrode reaction. At the same time, some reaction products will dissolve into the solution. If the volume of the electrolytic cell is too small, the solution concentration will change significantly during the long-term steady-state measurement, which will eventually affect the experimental results. In most cases, the volume of 50ml and 100ml are more choices.

How to choose a working electrode?

Common working electrodes include disk electrodes and replaceable electrode holders. The disk electrode is suitable as the base of the modified material, and it is modified to the base area of the disk electrode by mixing a membrane solution or the like with a powdered material. And if the material being studied is a sheet-like structure or the material can be modified to suitable materials such as conductive glass, carbon paper, carbon cloth, etc., it is more practical to choose a replaceable electrode clip.

Hg2SO4 reference electrodes are generally suitable for sulfuric acid or sulfate systems.
